Introduction

Basically Cryptocurrencies were meant to serve as a medium of exchange and not just to store a value. Due to the relatively smaller market cap, most of the popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin also tend to experience wide fluctuations in price, which will be more affected by everyday buy and sell orders. Usually, the smaller a market cap an asset has, the more volatile the price will be and in order to overcome this problem of volatility, Stablecoins were introduced.

So, the purpose of stablecoins is to provide a stable, constant measure of value which remains consistent over time. Thus, lower the standard deviation of the stablecoin, lower is the volatility and hence more stability in the stablecoin.

In other words, Stablecoins are an attempt to create a cryptocurrency that isn't volatile. Because, A Stablecoin’s value is pegged to a real world currency, also know as a fiat currency. For example, the Stablecoin Tether (or USDT) is worth 1 US Dollar and is expected to maintain this peg always, retaining the stability of Fiat currencies.
